The ancient tradition of the brass band in Southern Italy is being carried on in as lively a fashion today as ever in the last 100 years. The band is usually made up of 40 or 50 musicians who, for carnevals and other celebrations play in the streets of their town as they march through them, in Puglia, in Calabria and in Sicily. Almost without a moment's pause; from early morning till late at night, they give their all in a continuous concert on the march, in honour of the patron saint of whatever town they are in or on whichever Saint's Day it is. With their mixture of popular songs and operatic favourites they never fail to stir their audiences emotions, as if for the first time, and give life to the churning throngs on every type of festive occasion.
But how long will this phenomenon continue? Many believe that there will soon be no place for the brass band in Southern Italy as other forms of occupation and entertainment squeeze it out and guarantee its final demise.
