Five Short Films
The five short films are contributions to a television programme broadcast in five episodes on WDR in June 1986. The magazine worked as a kind of culture and lifestyle report. It presented the latest trends, current fashion creations, modern architecture and unconventional product design from various European countries (such as Italy, France or Great Britain). Rather than pure entertainment, the aim was to bring contemporary European culture and the diversity of new styling from the studios and workshops of European designers closer to viewers.
Milan was at that time the mecca of modern design. It was the age of postmodernism. There, attempts were made to dissolve the boundaries between fashion, architecture and fine art. The five ten-minute films are an attempt to capture the atmosphere of this radical departure in Italy. Five people are portrayed who, seen together, offer an insight into the transition of the Italian fashion/design scene into the art scene, as well as its commercial exploitation. The people are: Alessandro Mendini, Cinzia Ruggeri, Sergio Calatroni, Siné Caruana and Flavio Albanese. The films have no commentary. Italian is spoken.
